TOM - Silvia Prada

10.6 X 7.9 INCHES X (27 X 20 CM) / 44 PAGES / COLOR

TOM explores Finnish artist Tom of Finland’s collection of collages and personal reference pages through the eyes and hands of contemporary, female artist, Silvia Prada. Prada’s characteristic portraits highlighting male beauty and iconography are seamlessly infused with various facets and visual cues directly drawn from Tom’s artistic eye. Adding another historical and artistic layer, the portraits are set to geometric backdrops typical to Prada’s work – loony remixes of 20th century art movements such as Bauhaus, De Stijl and Russian Constructivism. Prada’s unique position as a female artist not only expands the narratives surrounding gay subjectivity, but also proposes unexpected ways of seeing and understanding Tom’s work. Moreover, it pays homage to the significant role that women have played for decades in defining and supporting gay culture.

Silvia Prada, born in Ponferrada, Spain, lives and works in New York. Her work as an illustrator and decorative artist is a monochromatic and geometric documentation of pop culture, capturing at times a fetishistic representation of select defining moments and iconography. Prada stepped into the illustration and art scene in 2000 by producing works for the now-folded The Face magazine, and has since received assignments from magazine clients including V, BlackBook, Dazed & Confused, Fanzine137, Candy and EY! Magateen. Her works, which include large-scale illustration as well as poster installations, have been exhibited in galleries and cultural institutions worldwide such as Colette, MOCA Shanghai, MUSAC and Deitch Projects.

TOM / Silvia Prada is produced in collaboration with Tom of Finland Foundation. A portion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to the Foundation.
